Tractor Mendelssohn dream

David and I were at my parents’ house after some sort of get-together, and my parents randomly decided to tell us at that point what their retirement plans were, since it was starting to come together for them. They were apparently planning to move to the coast of northern california, own a house on a peninsula, basically almost right in the water, and start farming there. They even had a model of the John Deere farm tractor they were going to use to show us. They were going to grow corn, using a new technique in which you can grow it in very wet land, up to several inches deep in water (apparently salt water is fine). I started talking to them about the risks involved with this, especially the possibility of something going wrong during harvest, and them losing the entire year’s work, but they seemed ok with that, after all, it’s just a retirement job. My dad said that he’d give the local tractor repairman a call (somehow referring to our local one in ME which made total sense) and have him kinda ready to come over if the tractor started messing up. I said, wouldn’t it make a lot more sense to have the John Deere repairman “on call” than the guy at our old tractor repair shop who doesn’t even like John Deere? My dad conceded that yeah that made more sense.
At that point, I had to get ready to go to work, so I started getting dressed up to go outside, putting a long-sleeve shirt on. David was playing a song on the piano, I think one that he composed. My mom was telling him that he had to get going really soon too. I left, and drove over to Penners where I was apparently going to work. I started going into the entryway, though I still had my hand stuck in one of the sleeves in the shirt I had been trying to put on. Mrs. Penner was there and said Hi. Then I noticed that David was somehow there already, and about to start practicing with a small group of violin players. I was incredulous as to how he got there before me, and I asked Mrs. Penner how he got there so fast, and she said something about him leaving before me, but I knew he hadn’t, but then something occurred to me that could have made it possible. I then grabbed a peach so I could start to eat it as I went out to the back deck. I noticed that there was a rather large soft and brown spot on it, so I bit that chunk out and went outside to spit it into the woods. Unfortunately there was some random man out there that I didn’t know, so I felt bad just spitting in front of him, so I tried to let the bad part fall out of my mouth into my hand so I could throw it instead, but only part of it came out, and I had to swallow the rest. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I said hello to the man, and we had a little small talk.
Then my viewpoint changed, and I was watching this young boy coming into the house to meet with these other violinists (in the background I could hear the Mendelssohn violin concerto coming from the group in the music room). He apparently decided he was supposed to know French, so when he went into the room and they all stopped to say Hi, he randomly gave this little speech which seemed like a bunch of random phrases that he knew in French all stuck together. Indeed, after he had said it, I could see in my mind’s eye a translation, like I was rewinding a movie and putting captions in, and it was just a bunch of random phrases. Kinda funny. Anyway, no one really minded, they all kinda chuckled, but he was only about 12 so no worries. Then, since he hadn’t been able to bring his violin, they gave him one to borrow. My viewpoint gradually shifted to first-person of the boy’s view, but more like a movie narrative, because I knew more than he did. He was a little chagrined that he had to play on a full size, since his was only a half size, but he gamely decided to give it a try. They made space in the circle for him, and he sat right between the first and second violinists, though he was thinking he wasn’t very special and was probably sitting between some of the lesser violinists. Anyway, they started to play, and low and behold, he was playing the solo part to the Mendelssohn violin concerto! The funny thing was, he didn’t realize it was the solo part. After a few bars, he stopped and started asking why his part was so much more “out there” than everyone else’s. His mom told him that it was ok, and I think he sorta figured out that he had the solo. His mom hadn’t told him, because she didn’t want him to be too nervous to play with other people, but I was thinking it probably would have been better if he knew how good he was, and was prepared to solo. He was apparently thinking the same thing, because he said that he wished he knew that, cause he would have practiced more! We all kinda chuckled at that, because he sounded amazing on the Mendelssohn. My dream started fading out, but I knew that the boy would keep trying, and I figured he’d do really well as a soloist.

I just stumbled upon this National Geographic article of a cave in Vietnam. I've never seen or heard of such an incredible cave before! Apparently it is the largest cavern in the world (not longest but biggest) at 2.5 miles long, a sustained 300' wide and 600' high. Don't miss the pictures - they're unbelievable! Many of them have people in them, but you don't always see them at first because they look like ants in the picture!

Am I Good Enough?

[This was the article we talked about in my Reading and Discussion club this morning]

“If you die tonight will you go to heaven? Why or why not?”
Those were the questions on the survey they passed out at my church recently.
The results of the anonymous survey revealed that most of the responses fell into one of two categories. Either people felt they would go to heaven because they were good people who were better than most of the other people around them, or they felt they would not go to heaven because they were terrible sinners. Some added that God was not done working on them yet, so they still had hope that they might make it.

The “overwhelming majority” of people, it seems, base their salvation on themselves. I call that a crying shame. For one thing, imagine the responsibility that puts on their shoulders. Can they be good enough to save themselves? Absolutely not! And how about the ones who feel that God isn’t finished with them yet? I can’t imagine the terror of going through life knowing on any given day that it could be my last and wondering whether or not God will be “finished” with me before my time is up, can you?Not, mind you, that I’m unfamiliar with these thoughts myself. I’ve spent time walking both the “Yes” road and the “No” road, but ignorance saved me from too much mental anguish over my plight. It doesn’t matter what your state of mind is, whether troubled or in ignorance like I was; if you find yourself on either road, there’s one thing you need to know before you take another step: The only way— the only way—to God is through Jesus.

Having been a Christian all my life, I don’t have a problem with that statement. It’s been part of my theology forever. But Elizabeth Gilbert, in her book Eat, Pray, Love says, “And while I do love that great Teacher of peace who was called Jesus, and while I do reserve the right to ask myself in certain trying situations what indeed He would do, I can’t swallow that one fixed rule of Christianity insisting that Christ is the only path to God.”

Getting in the boat

That statement is no surprise to God. He knew some people would find salvation through Christ and Christ alone a problem. Paul wrote, “Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength” (1 Corinthians 1:22–24).The thing is, Christians who think they are either “good enough” or “not good enough” are missing the boat just as surely as Gilbert is.

Being good enough or not good enough implies that we have some part in our salvation, as if we, with Christ, are rowing our salvation boat. In reality, Christ is the boat and He’s rowing the boat. By Himself. Our first decision is: do we want to get in the boat? If we do, we must ask ourselves, are we willing to sit there and let Christ take us wherever He sees fit? And if He asks us to do something, are we willing to do it?

We have to allow Jesus to set up shop in our life and change it. I always dreaded having to do that part. I thought it would be like trying to go on a diet. I thought God would ask me to give up all kinds of stuff I loved to do and through sheer willpower I’d have to muscle through and give it up. But what if I don’t want to?

In reality, God takes away the desire to do what doesn’t conform to His best intention for your life.

Imagine the ease with which smokers could kick the habit if they no longer desired another cigarette. Is it always easy? No, not always. Is it always possible? Absolutely. “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Change of heart

For years—years—I was under the impression that salvation was some sort of formula: Belief + works + spending time with God + denying yourself and considering the needs of everyone else to be more important than your own = salvation. Yet if you had asked me, I would have told you that salvation was belief in Jesus. Belief, in my version, was limited to a head experience: Is the sky blue? Yes. Is the grass green? Yes. Is Jesus the Son of God? Yes. Does He save me from my sins? Yes.

But mere mental assent is not a heart experience. Belief was acknowledging that “yes, Jesus is God’s Son.” I had no problem with that. But neither do demons, who “believe, and tremble” (James 2:19 KJV), but they are not saved.

Belief has to change us in some way. And the only way for that change to happen is for us to be willing to let it happen. It won’t happen overnight. It’s a constant thing, nurtured in part by actions like reading the Bible, praying, having and maintaining a relationship with God, and worshiping with other believers. As we grow in this relationship, we will begin to change. We will become more like Christ.

So, if you die tonight will you go to heaven? That depends on whether you want to get in the boat or stay on the shore, not on whether you’re good enough to get in the boat.

Jesus died to save us all. Not just the “good” ones.

How to survive an earthquake

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON 'THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE'

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the
American Rescue Team International (ARTI ), the world's most experienced
rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an
earthquake.

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams
from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a
member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United
Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years, and have worked at
every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous
disasters.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City
during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child
was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by
lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene --
unnecessary.

Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings
falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects,
leaving a space or void next to them - NOT under them. This space is
what I call the 'triangle of life'. The larger the object, the stronger,
the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the
void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void
for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed
buildings, on television, count the 'triangles' you see formed. They are
everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed
building.

TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

1) Most everyone who simply 'ducks and covers' when building collapse
are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars,
are crushed.

2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position.
You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival
instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next
to a sofa, next to a bed, next to a large bulky object that will
compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during
an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the
earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids
are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing
weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will
cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply
roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can
achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a
sign on the back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down
on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out
the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next
to a sofa, or large chair.

6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is
killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward
or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam
falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case,
you will be killed!

7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different 'moment of
frequency' (they swing separately from the main part of the building).
The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each
other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who
get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads -
horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away
from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be
damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they
may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always
be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not
damaged.

8) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible
- It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than
the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of
the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be
blocked.

9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls
in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what
happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The
victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their
vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by
getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles.
Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of
their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3
feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall
directly across them.

10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices
and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact.
Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.

The entire world is experiencing natural calamities so be prepared!

'We are but angels with one wing, it takes two to fly'

In 1996 we made a film, which proved my survival methodology to be
correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul, University of
Istanbul Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical,
scientific test. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins
inside. Ten mannequins did 'duck and cover,' and ten mannequins I used
in my 'triangle of life' survival method. After the simulated earthquake
collapse we crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film
and document the results. The film, in which I practiced my survival
techniques under directly observable, scientific conditions , relevant
to building collapse, showed there would have been zero percent survival
for those doing duck and cover.

There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using
my method of the 'triangle of life.' This film has been seen by millions
of viewers on television in Turkey and the rest of Europe, and it was
seen in the USA , Canada and Latin America on the TV program Real TV.

We know verse four pretty well, as well as verse six. How often do we follow their injunctions, though? I've been pretty anxious about things recently... I haven't spent enough time letting my requests, desires, and concerns be made known to God, and I certainly haven't been rejoicing in all this. Paul and Silas sang while they were in prison - how were they able to do this? Because they knew that they were being held in God's hands and no matter what trials they endured it would all be to His glory and for their ultimate good. I don't think God would have opened the gates of the prison with an earthquake if Paul and Silas had been quaking in fear, and not trusting in God.

Also, I am to be known for my gentleness (v. 5), rather than for harshness or callousness. I can do this because the Lord is always at hand, and he will change my heart if I but ask.

I need to spend less time worrying, and more time praying and giving thanks to God for His blessings and His care for me. Only then will God work mightily in my behalf. He can't answer the prayer never prayed.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep my heart and mind through Christ Jesus.

I was recently given a book about photography by a friend of mine. Since I am interested in taking good pictures, it was a good book to receive. I read it straight through, and really appreciated how much it helped me learn to take better photos. I knew I would come back to it and read parts of it over and over. In fact I liked it so much that I bought a few more copies and gave them to some of my friends, who I knew would probably be interested in such a book. I was quite excited about it!

What do I do when I read a book that can help me learn to be not a better photographer, but a better person? Do I spend time studying it and re-reading it? Do I get excited? Do I share it with my friends?

Peppermint

On a cool evening in August, Ali and I decided to have some hot chocolate, in memory of good times at Southern. I got out the mix and heated up some water. Then I remembered that Ali liked peppermint in her chocolate - she had even had a mix at Southern that had some peppermint flavoring in it - so I began rummaging around my mom’s cupboard for some peppermint flavoring. Happening upon a tiny glass bottle labeled “Peppermint Oil” I presumed I had found the object of my search, and showed it to Ali. We opened it up, and since it appeared to have a dropper style opening, decided to proceed with a judicious amount of caution by putting in one drop per mug of chocolate, for starters. I chivalrously offered to drop some in Ali’s cup first, and managed to get about 6 drops in before I could move my hand. Almost immediately I could smell the fresh peppermint scent. After taking a sip of the beverage, Ali made some interesting noises and suggested that perhaps this stuff was a bit strong. I bent over to take a whiff of her drink, and was immediately and thoroughly “cleaned out” - you could have eaten off my bronchioles! I then decided to lick a bit of the oil off of my finger. I rapidly deduced, between coughs, that “Peppermint Oil” was perhaps not quite the same sort of thing as “Peppermint Extract” and decided not to add a drop to my own drink. Unfortunately, at this point, my right eye began to itch, so I rubbed it with my finger, and then proceeded with some urgency to the sink to attempt to wash out of my eye the oil I had just rubbed into it. After a few minutes of this diverting activity, I dried off my head and went blinkingly about the kitchen getting new water and new hot chocolate for Ali, and rummaging in the cupboard for something labeled “Extract.”

Finally Sabbath

This has been a pretty busy week for me. It started with leaving Metallak Island, where I had been camping all the previous week - a great trip (pictures to come, sometime). When we finally got home Ali and I had about 18 hours to get her ready to leave for Tanzania. After a couple shopping trips, one Sunday evening and the other Monday morning, all the last minutes were gotten, and we packed up and left just after 2pm for Boston. Ali's flight left at 7pm, and as you may know she got there safely and has gotten settled in there in the Adra compound. Tuesday was kind of a whirlwind, because, as I knew and had planned on, I had to sign up for a class from the University of Maine, a day after classes started. This was compounded by the fact that the class, Fields and Waves, was only offered in Orono, which is two hours away from where I live. With my mom's help, we found a pastor who lives about 30 minutes from the campus who was willing to have me stay overnight at his place for free. My schedule is MWF lecture and Th evening recitation, so I will go back and forth on Mondays but will spend Wednesday through Friday up there, staying at the pastor's house. So Tuesday was pretty busy, planning all that plus packing up food and stuff to take with me. Wednesday was interesting, cause I was learning a new campus, trying to find where to get parking permits, books, and campus cards while avoiding parking tickets and also making it to my class on time, this task made harder by the fact that while the maps have the names of the buildings on them, they don't tell you what building goes with engineering, or anything like that. Everything turned out fine, however, and I did a bit more exploring in the area after my class before heading south to find the pastor's place. I found that with no difficulty, since I had my GPS and his address, and settled in there. Thursday was spent mostly working on finding a job in the area, with no success, and then looking for ways to work online, with partial success. I spent most of the day in the library, using a computer there, sweltering in the non-ac environment, till I had to leave to go to recitation at 6pm. Friday was probably the least busy day of all, since basically all i did was go into the library for a couple hours and use the computer some more, and then go to class, and then drive back to Brunswick. Now, after mowing the lawn and having a nice long talk with Ali, I'm ready for bed and for Sabbath!

So, if you're looking for me during the week, you might need to include Orono, ME in your search, at least for the next semester.

Matchstick Music Man

This guy made all these instruments himself... out of USED MATCHSTICKS!!

Jack Hall from Brighton, England, couldn't pick, strum, or draw a bow, but when it came to building stringed instruments, he had an amazing talent. You see, every inch of the instruments he built is made entirely with used matchsticks. Yes, dead matches.
Jack a seaman in the Merchant Navy, conceived the idea out of boredom. In the 1930s, he served as a deck-hand on the American owned tramp steamer Eastwick. Daily routine in those days was monotonous and during the long off-watch hours there was literally nothing to do, as Jack explained, "You had to make your own amusement or you either went mad or melancholy."
With a natural sense of tidiness, Jack picked up matchsticks from around the ship discarded by his fellow crewmen. Then, sitting at the small mess table, he idly passed the time laying them out into various patterns, when the thought struck him that enough of them, glued together, would make a board that could be put to some useful purpose. He contrived a glue pot (an empty tobacco tin and an oldsaucepan from the ship's galley) and, with carpenter's glue and a small collection of used matchsticks, built his first layer of timber. Unfortunately, this attempt proved unsuccessful; it didn't provide enough strength to work with. Undeterred, he continued to experiment and glued a second layer crosswise. Success! He was rewarded with a sturdy two-ply board, and a new idea was born. Jack began building his matchstick instruments - in response to a challenge from a shipmate, who jokingly said, "Why don't you make a fiddle and strike up a tune?" "Why not?" thought Jack with a grim determination. An SOS went out to his relatives and friends, pleading with them not to throw away their matchsticks, but to send them to him as, and when, convenient. From then on, whenever the Eastwick arrived in port,he could depend on his mail containing packets of used matchsticks.
Jack had no carpentry skills and no knowledge of instrument making, so while his ship was in port, he would go ashore and check out a pawnshop to study the measurements, weight and feel of a fiddle. Then, back to the ship with his rudimentary pencil sketches and measurements, to begin his self-imposed task. Working five hours a day for six months, he singly glued together more than 20,000 matchsticks (with approximately three pounds of carpenter's glue) that he whittled down to 14,000 to complete the fiddle, with another 1,000 each forming the chin-rest and bow. Although he was no musician (he couldn't read or play a note), it was nevertheless a proud moment for him when he walked into the ship's mess room, tuned up the fiddle, and played a few unorthodox notes to the rousing acclamation of his shipmates. What had started as a challenge now became a compulsion: between 1936 and 1939, he built a Neopolitan mandolin, an acoustic guitar, a larger 12-sided flat back mandolin of his own design, and a tenor banjo.

It goes on, and gets even better: He actually bent many of the matches he used to make the curved sides of his instruments, soaking them in water and bending them individually by hand. He made cases for some of his instruments from the matchboxes left over after he'd made the instruments themselves.

The one on the left is the Shuttle Orbiter Atlantis and on the right is the International Space Station! Incredibly, Thierry caught them as they passed directly in front of the Sun! To give you an idea of how talented Thierry is, the entire transit lasted just over half a second.

Get a good look. This is the last mission of Atlantis (unless it’s needed as a rescue mission later this year), so we won’t get too many more views like this.

No shoes

Today was no shoes day at Southern; an incentive to raise awareness that many children around the world do not have shoes. Now, this is obviously a problem for many people - poor children in colder climates, children who must walk in hazardous areas where they can cut their feet or become infected, etc. You all know that part of it.

However, I want to focus on the flip side of the issue - the fact that it is actually healthier for your feet to walk barefoot!

You may not be aware, but "...the skin on the soles of your feet resists abrasions and blistering, and going barefoot is beneficial to the musculoskeletal structure of your feet and ankles. Kicking off your shoes can help prevent a host of foot injuries: bunions, heel spurs, and bone deformities, among others. Shoes act like casts, holding the bones of the foot so rigid that they can't move fluidly." Wearing shoes actually causes your feet to lose the ability to support themselves! [source]

Furthermore, running barefoot is also better for you! When you run with shoes on, you are encouraged by the extensive padding in your shoes to land with a jolt on your heel, after all, you can get a longer stride out of it, and it's easier. As you can imagine, this isn't good for your body - all that jolting will eventually cause repetitive stress injuries and other problems. Here is a great article, much more recent than that first page, about the benefits and methods of running barefoot.

So, who is better off, the person in Africa, who has no shoes, runs all day on bare feet, and is, on average, much healthier than us, or the person in the U.S. with a plush lifestyle which allows his body to atrophy and degenerate to the point where if he had to go without a car, or a bike, or pavement, or perhaps shoes, would likely injure himself in at least one of many possible ways?

Perhaps we should be lobbying to clean up the places that are dangerous to walk barefoot, instead of putting the bandage of shoes on the problem. My opinion is, the more "necessities" we impose on people of developing nations, the more they become like Americans. Is that really what is best for them? How about we clean up the mess that our commercialism has made, instead?

Mathematicians Stunned when Computer Reaches Final Digit of Pi!!!

A team of Japanese researchers at a leading national university have upended the entire scientific world when it unexpectedly calculated the value of pi to 1.3511 trillion places, which is apparently the final digit in this number previously thought to be infinite.
"We don't understand," said visibly panicked project team member Makoto Kudo. "We were just trying to set a new world record for most digits calculated. We had no idea it would run out. Honestly!"
Researchers at Tokyo University, led by Professor Yasumasa Kanada, calculated the value for pi with a Hitachi supercomputer for over 500 hours in March. They were seeking to break their own world record. The Hitachi supercomputer is capable of 2 trillion calculations per second.
"We just wanted to get to 1.5 trillion places," said Kudo. "We intended no harm."
Pi is a number expressing the ratio of the circumference of a perfect circle to its diameter. As there are no perfect circles or spheres in nature (since matter is composed of atoms and is therefore not smooth) the continued extension of pi has long been seen as a harmless exercise of computer power. However, its symbolic value to the scientific world is profound.
"Probably no symbol in mathematics has evoked as much mystery, romanticism, misconception, and human interest as the number pi," said David Blatner, author of The Joy of Pi. "It is the ultimate limitless vista serving as inspiration to mathematicians the world over. With our world so rudely circumscribed, how are we to continue? What point is there in going on if even pi has a limit?"
Kanada's team has volunteered to continue building on pi by generating random numbers, but the mathematical community seems to feel it wouldn't be the same. Some refuse to accept the findings, although Kanada's team has run the calculation three times.
"We thoroughly condemn the slanderous allegation that pi has a limit," said Rolf Umbridge of the Ancient and Honorable Society of Pi Watchers. "We are so incensed by the very notion that we hereby officially censure the University of Tokyo. Dr. Kanada, you are dead to me, sir!"
Most, however, do not blame Kanada or his team, acknowledging that someone would have discovered that pi is finite sooner or later.
"Pi showed me the power of numbers," said UCLA graduate student in mathematics Alan Prentiss wistfully. "It was that episode of Star Trek where Captain Kirk exorcizes the evil energy entity from the ship's computer by commanding the computer to calculate the value of pi, which used up all the computer's memory. I was just a kid, but I thought - wow, math can be used to fight evil. But now I realize that was just a fantasy, a sham: the computer would have finished the job, and the Enterprise would have been lost. It's profoundly disillusioning."

This is absolutely crazy...I can't even fathom all the repercussions this will have to science!

Wolfram|Alpha

I've known about Wolfram Alpha for quite some time now, but just noticed that I can put a little bar on my site, so I have one on the right now. Wolfram Alpha is called a computational knowledge engine - it "is the first step in an ambitious, long-term project to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable by anyone," according to the site.

It's really hard to describe, so I recommend trying out instead. There are a few searches they recommend for beginning users, just to get a feel for what it can do, try:

entering any date (e.g. a birth date: june 23, 1988)
enter any city (e.g. a home town: new york)
enter any two stocks (IBM Apple)
enter any calculation ($250 + 15%)
enter any math formula (x^2 sin(x))
enter any two first names (andrew, barbara)

You'll probably be surprised at the amount and type of results you get from this engine - it's pretty crazy. Not only does it often give info in a number of different categories, it has more info in each category than it shows at first... just click on the More link in a particular frame.

A blind man shocks researchers with what he sees.

Patient TN was, by his own account, completely blind. Two consecutive strokes had destroyed the visual cortex of his brain, and consequently, his ability to see.
It is not uncommon for stroke patients to suffer brain damage, but the case of TN — referenced by his initials, the general practice in such studies — was peculiar. His first stroke had injured only one hemisphere of his visual cortex. About five weeks later, a second stroke damaged the other hemisphere. An assessment of his brain function revealed that after two strokes, TN, in his 50s, was clinically blind.
Known as selective bilateral occipital damage, TN’s unusual injury made him the subject of much interest while recovering at a hospital in Geneva. Researchers began examining him and discovered that despite his blindness, he had maintained the ability to detect emotion on a person’s face. He responded appropriately — with emotions such as joy, fear, and anger — to a variety of facial expressions. Observed activity in his amygdala — the part of the brain responsible for processing emotions — confirmed the curious results.
To further test the extent of TN’s abilities, researchers from Tilburg University in the Netherlands devised a simple yet decisive experiment: an obstacle course. They arranged boxes, chairs, and various other objects down a long hallway. The team then asked TN to navigate the course without any sort of assistance. TN was skeptical, as he required the aid of a cane and a guide to get around. But eventually, he decided to participate. Researchers recorded the result in their recent paper: “Astonishingly,” the report reads, “he negotiated [the course] perfectly and never once collided with any obstacle, as witnessed by several colleagues who applauded spontaneously when he completed the course.”
TN’s rare condition is known as blindsight. Because his stroke damaged only his visual cortex, his eyes remain functional and as a result can still gather information from his environment. He simply lacks the visual cortex to process and interpret it. Sight has changed for TN from a conscious to a largely subconscious experience. He no longer has a definitive picture of his surroundings, but he has retained an innate awareness of his position in the world. He is, to some degree, able to see without being aware that he is seeing.
The researchers explained that TN’s success indicates that “humans can sustain sophisticated visuo-spacial skills in the absence of perceptual awareness.” Similar abilities have been observed in monkeys, but TN’s is the first study of these abilities in humans. According to Beatrice de Gelder, a neuroscientist from Harvard and Tilburg, who helped conduct the study, “we see what humans can do, even with no awareness of seeing or any intentional avoidance of obstacles. It shows us the importance of these evolutionarily ancient visual paths.”

The Bass

I've been reorganizing my My Documents folder on my desktop for the first time ever - i just had everything that i ever wrote or saved in that one folder - and i came upon this story from a tour to Jamaica a few years back. I thought I'd share it; it's pretty epic! :)

The Bass

This is the story of the bass I used in Jamaica. I finally received it on Sunday afternoon (we arrived on Thurs.). I got it off the truck, brought it inside, and the first thing I noticed was that the case was the most decrepit and bogus piece of junk you ever saw. The zippers were ruined, and the case was a pain to put on and take off. It was made out of really heavy rubber, and only opened the minimum needed to barely get it off the bass. When I got the case off, the next thing I noticed was the bridge had hugely deep grooves for the strings, about a half an inch deep! While Danielle, Preston, and I were trying to figure this out, we started to straighten the bridge because it was crooked, and Preston noticed that the bridge was really high on the bass. It was positioned near the top of the “f” holes! So we decided to move it down. We looked inside to find the soundpost so we could set the bridge properly, and there was none!! (I found out later that it was stuck in a corner, because it rattled loose after a while. We obviously couldn’t reset it, however.) We found that we couldn’t move the bridge to the proper locality because of the deep grooves in the bridge: if we put it in the right place, the strings were hitting the fingerboard. So we had to set it up with the bridge high on the bass so the strings were the right height. I nervously tuned it up, hoping it wouldn’t collapse, which it didn’t. The other problems were discovered over a longer time. The fingerboard had a finish on it, which was partially flaked off. The fingerboard was on slightly crooked, so it stuck out from the neck a little on one side. The bass itself was wider than normal overall including the inner bouts, making it hard to bow on the E and G strings. The neck had been broken at the base at some point, and was held in place with two nails and a bolt. The upper bout was extra wide in proportion to the lower bout, so the bass felt farther away than normal. The endpin was immoveable and the wood plug was halfway out, so the bass was perpetually about one whole step too low—whenever I would put my hand up to start playing, it would inevitably be about a whole step flat. I finally figured out the reason it felt so soft to play: since the bridge had to be so high, the strings didn’t have to be under so much pressure to tune to the same tone, causing them to feel extra soft and to hit the fingerboard from time to time. During the first concert the bass developed a loud buzz on A and D notes, so the next day I had to tighten all the screws on the scroll. The bass was plywood, really heavy, and extremely abused. All the edges that touch the ground are broken off, and when I looked inside, I could see daylight through one of the joints. I don’t know how it sounds so much without a soundpost, but the A and E strings are really loud and the D and G strings are somewhat quieter, but still reasonably strong. The strings are badly in need of replacement, and are unraveling in places. Since the case’s zippers are broken, I leave them open and carry the bass by holding onto it through the case instead of using the handles-very awkward! The endpin, in addition to being unmovable, was really not a real endpin at all, just a rod with the end flattened, presumably to keep it from falling into the bass, though it never moved. Thus, it has no point, and slides around with great suddenness during concerts on a stone or tile floor.

Evidently i didn't add to this epistle the account of what happened at the Jamaica Grand Hotel, so I shall append it here:

About halfway through the concert, I believe during the Hoe-Down, I was happily plucking along, when suddenly i was startled by a huge snap or crack! I looked down and saw that the bridge had fallen, right in the middle of the song! Dr. Rittenhouse looked up, as did most of the rest of the orchestra, and I believe saw what happened, and I left the stage when the song was over, to try to put it back to rights. Luckily, Rittenhouse is very long-winded in her introductions to pieces, and i was actually able to stand the bridge up again without even loosening the strings! The deep groves in the bridge were helpful for this, because they kept the strings in place while i was trying to stand it up. Since I did it this way, it only took a minute or two, and I was back onstage before she was half done with her intro. When she turned around and saw me back onstage, she looked rather surprised... all in all a rather hilarious occasion! :)

Hubble telescope's latest images

A refurbished U.S. space telescope is showing Earth the sharpest photos yet of cosmic beauty, complete with heavenly glows. NASA on Wednesday unveiled the first deep space photos taken by the Hubble telescope since its billion dollar repair mission earlier this year. That work included installing two new cameras, other science instruments and replacing broken parts. The images of galaxies and nebulas are sharper than previous photos taken of the same places by Hubble before the upgrade. Some of the colorful images have brilliant glows of light that give them halos that to some people can appear heavenly. Here is a look at some of the most recent images from Hubble and some of the images taken earlier by the telescope...

This image shows the planetary nebula, catalogued as NGC 6302, but more popularly called the Bug Nebula or the Butterfly Nebula. The Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), a new camera aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope was installed by NASA astronauts in May 2009, during the servicing mission to upgrade and repair the 19-year-old Hubble telescope. NGC 6302 lies within our Milky Way galaxy, roughly 3,800 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. The glowing gas is the star's outer layers, expelled over about 2,200 years. The "butterfly" stretches for more than two light-years, which is about half the distance from the Sun to the nearest star, Alpha Centauri.

This NASA Hubble Space Telescope image creates a picture composed of gas and dust, the pillar resides in a tempestuous stellar nursery called the Carina Nebula, located 7,500 light-years away in the southern constellation Carina. The image shows that astronomers are given a much more complete view of the pillar and its contents when distinct details not seen at visible wavelengths are uncovered in near-infrared light. Scorching radiation and fast winds (streams of charged particles) from these stars are sculpting the pillar and causing new stars to form within it. Streamers of gas and dust can be seen flowing off the top of the structure.

This image captured by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera-2 and released in 2001 shows an unusual edge-on galaxy, revealing details of its warped dusty disk and showing how colliding galaxies spawn the formation of new generations of stars. During observations of the galaxy the camera, designed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, passed a milestone taking its 100,000th image since shuttle astronauts installed it in the Hubble in 1993.

Resembling the fury of a raging sea, this image actually shows a bubbly ocean of glowing hydrogen gas and small amounts of other elements such as oxygen and sulfur. The photograph, taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope on May 29-30, 1999, captures a small region within M17, a hotbed of star formation. M17, also known as the Omega or Swan Nebula, is located about 5,500 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. The image was released to commemorate the thirteenth anniversary of Hubble's launch on April 24, 1990.

One Star Pound Bypasses Needless Voicemail Instructions

We don’t need explicit instructions on how to do so from a robot, yet you get just that almost every time you call someone’s mobile: “To page this person, press five now. At the tone, please record your message. When you are finished, you may hang up, or press one for more options.” To reduce your cell minute usage and stop letting carriers waste your life with Silicon Sally’s dumb monologue, you’ve got to know the right keystrokes. Every carrier lets you skip voicemail instructions, but the keystroke is different for each.
Blogger Jeremy Toemon runs down the three-key combo that will cover major cellphone carriers in the U.S.: One Star Pound. When you call a friend and want to leave a VM fast:

Step One: Push 1. If your friend is on Sprint (or possibly Verizon, but not always), this skips the greeting and you are done, skip to End. IF you hear a message that says “One is not a valid option” skip to Step Three below, otherwise continue to Step Two.
Step Two: Push *. If your friend is on Verizon, you’ll hear the beep, and can leave your message. Skip ahead to the end now.
